Job Title: Head of Safety

Location: Cheshire (easy access to M6 & M56 & M62)

Client: Independent multi-discipline provider of innovative solutions to complex management, technical and engineering issues in highly regulated industries

Purpose & Summary:

To provide leadership, direction and solutions to the Company's Safety & Environmental resources - is the Company Safety Authority.

Ensures that contracted requirements are met by advising and supporting Project teams on nuclear, radiological and conventional safety technology. Where appropriate, ensure environmental safety support is available to Project teams to solve problems and produce innovative approaches and solutions.

Advise and support the Company's Staff, Management and Executive, as appropriate, on employee safety within the working environment and on environmental regulatory requirements as appropriate.

Reported to by Safety & Environmental functional resources.

 

 Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide focus and credibility to the Safety & Environmental function, both within the Company and to Customers
  • Manage the continuous development of the Company's Safety & Environmental processes
  • Work with personnel and managers across the Company to ensure that good Safety & Environmental practice is followed
  • Work with Project Teams and Customers to solve issues and prepare appropriate Safety & Environmental information
  • Contribute to the Company's strong Customer relationships by;
    • Providing personal and technical credibility, coupled with sound interpersonal skills
    • Nuturing the safety, environmental and personal skills of the functions' resources
    • Embedding in the Safety & Environmental resources an ethos that reflects the Customer focus and Company strengths
    • Embedding across the Company a strong safety culture in design and the working environment
  • Responsible for the assessment of potential new employees and enhancement of the assessment of their safety knowledge / capability
  • Assist in identifying further 'pull-through' work arising from existing Customer work

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Provide Technical input to Bid Preparation
  • Provide input to task estimate preparation
  • Prepare Proposals for areas of Company expertise for growth in the Safety & Environment field
  • Work closely with the MD and Directors as appropriate to enhance the capabilities  of the Company
  • Represent the Company in Customer forums
  • Review, advise and assist in matching resources to workload
  • Manage the preparation of Safety & Environmental Role Descriptions and Requirements
  • Contribute to the Company's income stream by maximising billable work against appropriate Projects
  • Member of the Company's Senior Management
  • Chair of the HS&E forum

Person Specification

Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience:

  • Scientific and / or Engineering Degree or equivalent
  • Chartered with a recognised institute and significant, relevant experience
  • Extensive experience, preferably in the nuclear field, with a proven leadership capability, covering;
    • Problem Definition
    • Safety methodology, safety case analysis in design and / or operations
    • Safety legislation and regulatory interface
    • Environmental safety law and practice overview
    • Engineering design methods overview
    • Knowledge of radiation, criticality and shielding physics
    • Multi-discipline interactions within Projects
    • Technical issue resolution
    • Team motivation
  • Skilled in written and verbal communications
  • Ability to delegate effectively
  • Expertise in integrating Safety & Environmental requirements with the Engineering functions Project needs
